Liverpool legend Phil Thompson chimes in on the conversation between Roy Keane and Virgil van Dijk
Liverpool skipper Virgil van Dijk was very vocal about his thoughts on Manchester United after the two teams fought to a goalless draw on Sunday. He said that the Reds were the only team playing to win.
Roy Keane did not take these comments lightly and proceeded to call Van Dijk arrogant. He even remarked on Liverpool’s history as he highlighted that they have only won one title in 30-odd years.
Van Dijk fired back and explained that he only said what he felt after that game. A statement that most seem to agree with. He insisted that his words were not coming from a place of arrogance but from his experience on the field that night.
Phil Thompson has now jumped into the conversation. He gave his own thoughts on the matter and proceeded to call out former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane. He also hinted that Roy Keane should not be talking about arrogance.
Let’s take a look at what Thompson had to say. (h/t talkSPORT)
“I really feel as though, you’ve come off that game, you now you’ve dominated, Manchester United have had that one chance with [Rasmus] Hojlund, and you’ve just felt frustration. Arrogance wasn’t in it.”
“And I love Roy, but I played that back and he just kept repeating the word. Roy, just get a life!”
Roy Keane is Manchester United through and through as said by Liverpool skipper Virgil van Dijk. So, asking him to get a life just for defending his team seems a little harsh.
But, we have to take into account that just like Keane rides for the Old Trafford squad, Phil Thompson also has a special place in his heart for Anfield and its people.
Though his words may have been a little blunt, even Manchester United fans seem to agree with Van Dijk. The Red Devils did not look like they were playing for the win.
