Patrice Evra claims Marcus Rashford should not have a straightforward route into the Manchester United XI

Former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra believes Alejandro Garnacho has earned a starting role over Marcus Rashford based on form. United beat Chelsea 2-1 in the Premier League game at Old Trafford with a match-winning performance from Scott McTominay.

United manager Erik ten Hag dropped Rashford to the bench and opted to use Garnacho and Antony in the wings. Garnacho has played a crucial role in recent games for the Red Devils and provided an assist against Chelsea.

The 19-year-old has been in sensational form for United since the club football returned from the November international break. The Argentine scored a wonder goal against Everton in United’s 3-0 Premier League victory at Goodison Park.

Garnacho proceeded to take his form in the 3-3 draw against Galatasaray in the Champions League Group A game. The Argentine youngster has been the best performer for the struggling United attack department by a mile.

Speaking to Amazon Prime (h/t BBC) Evra asserted that Garnacho deserves to play ahead of Rashford in the upcoming fixtures. He said:

“They needed a win after the disaster against Newcastle. He put the right players on the pitch. It will be tough for Marcus [Rashford] to come back into the team. I hope this team will stay they will have to fight because the kids played very well today.”

Rashford’s preferred position is the left flank from where he cuts inside and shoots from his dominant right foot. However, he has failed to repeat the performance of last season when he finished as the leading scorer for United.

The 26-year-old faced a severe backlash after his poor performance as a right winger against Newcastle. Rashford has faced constant criticism for his lack of defensive work ethic and inability to track back for his team.

The England international looked completely uninterested against the Magpies, an unacceptable sight for someone wearing the United jersey.

Evra makes a very valid point that Garnacho and Antony deserve more game time ahead of Rashford. Rashford needs to prove his worth and hopefully, he will take inspiration from Harry Maguire and McTominay. The duo worked their way back into the first team and earned the faith of their manager.
