Andy Cole criticizes Manchester United’s decision to overpay for Antony
According to the Metro, former Manchester United player Andy Cole criticizes his former club for overpaying for our Brazilian winger Antony. It’s sad that a player like Antony who was brilliant in Ajax failed to showcase the same talent here in the Premier League. On the other hand, the price which United got him for is another letdown as a whole.
In his 12 appearances for United this season, the Brazil international has neither scored a goal nor provided an assist. Cole has questioned why United is not signing wingers like Kaoru Mitoma, who cost just £2.7 million to join Brighton from Kawasaki Frontale in 2021.
Andy Cole said:
“We paid a massive amount of money for him. When you look at a club like Brighton who signed Mitoma for £2.7 million, then you have to ask what market are Manchester United shopping in when Brighton pays that for Mitoma and we end up paying £86 million for Antony? Are we not shopping in the same market?”
The Brazilian international scored ten goals and contributed five assists in his first season in England, but his erratic play kept him in and out of the starting lineup.
His technical prowess is evident, despite some doubting his physical traits for the Premier League. For the Brazilian, who scored goals in last season’s opening three Premier League games, things appeared to be going well. We didn’t realise at the time that it was just a false dawn.
People even had questions on whether Antony could play in the English League. However, what was certain was that he was a skilled player. At that point, we all thought that things were running right for the Brazilian who had managed to score three goals in his first three matches only for us to realize it was just an aberration.

But now is the moment for a player like Antony to take to the pitch and disprove the doubters. By now, we should know that investing in an unproven player is not necessary if we want to stay in the Premier League. However, we still think Antony has enough remaining time to earn a chance to play for the Red Devils.
