Manchester United are ready to sell “unhappy” Raphael Varane amid interest from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are ready to sell their star defender Raphael Varane with Bayern Munich interested in signing the Frenchman. United are aware of the fact that Varane is unhappy with the current predicament he is facing at the club.
The 30-year-old has fallen down the pecking order at the club due to nagging injuries and inconsistent performances this season. United manager Erik ten Hag has opted for the likes of Jonny Evans, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof over him.
The former France international has featured from the bench in a few games before the November international break. Pundits expected Varane to start against Luton Town after an injury to Evans during the game against FC Copenhagen. However, the United boss deployed a defence partnership of Maguire and Lindelof.
United signed Varane for £41m from Real Madrid during the summer of 2021 under former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Frenchman earned a global reputation and remarkable success during his tenure at Madrid.
Varane played a pivotal role for Real in winning the Champions League four times and La Liga three times. Additionally, winning the FIFA Club World Cup four times, the UEFA Super Cup three times and the Copa del Rey.
Ten Hag appointed Varane and Lisandro Martinez as his first-choice centre-back after joining the club before the 2022-23 season. The Dutchman fortified the Red Devils’ defence with the help of the Frenchman and Martinez. United kept the most clean sheets in the Premier League last season.
The Red Devils have failed to maintain the same level of defensive standards in the current season. They have conceded 30 goals from 18 matches, playing a big role in their nine losses in all competitions.
Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg used his social account on X to report that United are aware of Varane’s unhappiness. The report states that the 30-year-old is available for just €20-30m but a loan deal is not an option. The German giants Bayern are closely monitoring the situation, but they haven’t taken any action yet.

Many fans and football pundits questioned Varane‘s ability to keep the level of fitness and consistency required to play at United. The Frenchman needs to play regular football during the latter stage of his peak years. On the other hand, the Red Devils cannot afford to have a player with such a high wage to wither on the bench.
