Florian Plettenberg claims Manchester United defender Raphael Varane might join Bayern Munich
According to the famous journalist Florian Plettenberg’s latest tweet on X, Manchester United defender Raphael Varane could be on his way to German champions Bayern Munich.
Varane only moved to United in 2021 in a deal worth £41 million from Real Madrid. Last season, he forged a strong alliance with Lisandro Martinez. But even though Erik ten Hag, the manager of United, has denied having a falling out with the French defender, he has regularly chosen to leave out the four-time Champions League winner from his matchday squads of late.
Due to Harry Maguire’s recent form revival, Ten Hag frequently chooses to partner the Englishman with 35-year-old Jonny Evans or Victor Lindelof, leaving Varane on the bench. The Frenchman is among the top-paid players at United, earning almost £340,000 a week.
Varane has only started one of the previous eight Manchester United games. Ten Hag has maintained that benching the World Cup winner was a tactical choice rather than a falling out between the pair.
The 30-year-old often struggles with injuries and has enjoyed better days while at Real Madrid. But he is far from done and still has much to offer. Given his quality, it makes sense that the likes of Bayern would be keen on his services.
However, the fact that veterans like Jonny Evans get the nod ahead of him could serve as a sign for Varane. Whether this will prompt him to seek new pastures in the summer of 2024 remains to be seen.
The Red Devils are about to enter a new phase under Jim Ratcliffe. Varane is a world-class player but can be considered one of the old guard. Manchester United must look forward and if that has to be sans the French international, so be it.
