Former Chelsea defender William Gallas called the transfer of Mason Mount to Manchester United, “a mistake” from the midfielder.

Former Chelsea defender William Gallas asserted that Mason Mount made a mistake while signing for Manchester United during the summer. Mount has struggled to find sufficient game time in recent games and only made cameo appearances from the bench.

The 24-year-old has only completed one full game for the Red Devils in all competitions this season. The Englishman played the whole game against Newcastle United in the 0-3 Carabao Cup defeat at Old Trafford.

United dominated the possession in that game but Mount and his teammates failed to create anything substantial. Furthermore, Newcastle easily carved the Red Devil’s defence with counter-attacking football to score their goals.

During Newcastle’s first goal, Tino Livramento easily shrugged off Mount, highlighting his frustrating individual performance.

Gallas told Lord Ping (h/t Mirror) that Mount’s transfer to the Red Devils from Chelsea was a mistake. He said:

“I think people understand why Mount left, even if his transfer to Man United was a mistake. His performances haven’t been great. Mount was a Chelsea boy, but they couldn’t find a solution. It was a mistake.”

United signed Mount from Chelsea for an initial £55m that could rise to £60m depending on success and appearances. The 24-year-old left the London club after spending 18 years and rising through Chelsea’s academy into the senior team.

Mount started the first two games for United when the Premier League commenced but sustained an injury against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Red Devils have lost nine out of their 18 games in all competitions this season. United manager Erik ten Hag deployed a new 4-2-4 formation against FC Copenhagen in their 4-3 Champions League defeat. Despite the poor result, the formation and new style of play made a positive impact.

Ten Hag deployed the same formation against Luton Town in the Premier League game at Old Trafford on Saturday. The Red Devils managed to win the hard-fought game 1-0 courtesy of a goal from Victor Lindelof. Mount came from the bench to replace the injured Christian Eriksen just before half-time and had an uneventful game.

The new formation would mean more competition in midfield which might lower the chances for Mount to impress. The England international is very versatile and can play in multiple positions for his team. Mount needs to make the most of the opportunity he gets to establish himself as a valuable first-team player.
