Manchester United winger Antony won’t be joining Flamengo despite recent rumours
According to the famous Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano’s latest tweet on X, Manchester United winger Antony won’t be joining the Brazilian club Flamengo despite rumours.
The Samba star left Ajax Amsterdam to join United almost eighteen months ago, but he hasn’t lived up to the £82 million price tag. Last weekend, he put up another lacklustre effort against Fulham. To relieve the pressure on Rasmus Hojlund, who hasn’t scored in the Premier League since his high-profile £72 million departure from Atalanta in the summer, United hope to acquire a striker in January.
The Brazilian also participated for ninety minutes in United’s 3-0 Carabao Cup loss to Newcastle United. While the Red Devils only managed two shots on goal throughout the game, Antony’s performance drew criticism from many supporters and sports analysts.
During his debut season in England, the Brazil international scored 10 goals and provided five assists, but he was in and out of the squad thanks to inconsistent displays.
Although some questioned his physical attributes as qualifications for playing in the premier league, his technical strengths were apparent. However, things seemed to be going on smoothly for the Brazilian who netted in the first three premier league matches of the season. Little did we know that it was nothing more than a false dawn.
Yet to make much of an impression this season, Antony has struggled to repair his spiralling reputation. This has seen him linked with an exit in January, with a swap deal (on loan) involving Flamengo star Gabriel Barbosa.
However, Romano has now poured cold water on the rumours. While he confirmed that while one winger could leave the club in January, it is likely to be Jadon Sancho and not Antony. The Brazilian, for now, appears to be set to continue on at Old Trafford.
