Premier League legend Alan Shearer lectured Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford for celebrating his birthday after the derby loss.

Premier League legend Alan Shearer chastised Manchester United star Marcus Rashford for his birthday celebration after the humiliating derby defeat. United lost 0-3 to Manchester City at Old Trafford in the Premier League Manchester derby.

The Citizens dominated the Red Devils throughout the game as the home team deployed a cautious approach. United failed to provide any substantial counter-attacking moves which only kept them under pressure throughout the game.

The Red Devils are having a nightmare season as they have lost eight out of 16 games in all competitions. The senior team has looked completely disjointed without any particular style of play and cohesiveness in both defence and attack.

Shearer said on the Rest is Football Podcast (h/t Manchester Evening News) that Rashford’s birthday celebration was “daft” and “stupid”. He said:

“I don’t care if it’s your birthday on a Saturday night. If you have been dumped 3-0 and it’s a terrible performance, you have got to read the room. The number of times that happened to me and to say we had a dinner planned or this planned. We’ve been beaten on a Saturday night and I said, I can’t go out. It was daft and it was stupid for Marcus to do that whether it is your birthday or not.”

Many fans and football experts have criticized Rashford for his performances and lack of contribution in the current season. The 26-year-old is currently in the ninth season at the senior level after earning a promotion from the United academy.

Rashford was the leading goal-scorer for the Red Devils last season which earned him a new contract with lucrative wages. However, the England international has regressed to the inconsistencies and uninspiring performances that kept him from reaching his potential before.

The Englishman is a tremendous asset with his ability to beat the defenders with pace and close control. Nevertheless, Rashford relies too much on cutting inside and shooting from the left flank which makes him very predictable.

Many critics have called Rashford as too selfish and lacking trust in his teammates when they are in better position.

Rashford need to add more assists into his game and unpredictability to go down the byline and cross. The England international has a good partner in Rasmus Hojlund who can match his pace in attack. The 26-year-old has opted to shoot instead of feeding his teammate in better position and it needs to change.

Whereas, Shearer’s criticism is over-the-top and he should learn to differentiate between personal and professional life more than Rashford. Rashford deserve constructive criticism but what Shearer has said are anything but constructive.
