Football pundit Tim Sherwood told Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag to apologize to Harry Maguire.

Football pundit Tim Sherwood told Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag to apologize to Harry Maguire after the defender proved him wrong. Sherwood believes Ten Hag tried to force Maguire out of the club, but Maguire’s recent performances have proven him wrong.

The Red Devils have won three consecutive games in all competitions with the Englishman playing a crucial role in defence. Maguire earned the man of the match against Sheffield United and scored the winning goal for United against FC Copenhagen.

Ten Hag assumed control of the club during the summer of 2022, and since then, he has limited the 30-year-old’s playing time. The Dutchman prefers Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez as the first-choice centre-back pairing for the Red Devils since his arrival. Maguire fell down the pecking order as a consequence and failed to impress the manager in his first season.

In his conversation with William Hill (h/t Metro), Sherwood stated that Maguire deserves an apology from the United manager for proving him wrong. He said:

“I’ve got a lot of time for Harry Maguire. He was getting shoved out the door and you could see that the manager was trying to edge him out but he didn’t want to leave. I think he’ll play a lot more football now because he’s made the manager realise it’s not all about superstars. Sometimes you need character, heart and personality to play at Old Trafford. I think he will play a lot more now, and I think Erik ten Hag owes him an apology.”

United signed Maguire from Leicester City in the summer of 2019. The deal broke the record for the highest fee paid for a defender at that time. The England international suffered from inconsistencies and embarrassing errors throughout his time at the club.

However, the 30-year-old faced unreasonable and unwarranted hate-filled narratives in the guise of criticism from the fans and football pundits.

Furthermore, Ten Hag removed Maguire from the captaincy role at United during the summer as he failed to play regularly.

The Red Devils accepted a £30m offer from West Ham for the 30-year-old during the summer transfer window. Maguire opted to fight for his place instead of accepting manager’s assessment of him and taking steps to resurrect his career elsewhere.

United has suffered from imbalance this season, resulting in six losses out of 13 matches. Nevertheless, the Red Devils have lost none in the four games Maguire has started in the centre-back role. The 30-year-old deserves more respect than he gets as the stats and his overall performances prove he has everything to play more regularly.
