Erik ten Hag has backed struggling Manchester United star Marcus Rashford to come good

Marcus Rashford has one of the best seasons in his career at Manchester United under Erik ten Hag last year. In many ways, he masked a lot of shortcomings that the Red Devils had with his clinical finishing.

Come the current campaign, everyone expected Rashford to take his game to the next level and hit new heights. The truth could not be further off though with the talented English forward struggling to make an impact.

Marcus Rashford, who has not been able to score on a regular basis like he did last season has left United handicapped in the attack. Antony’s mind just doesn’t seem to be here. Alejandro Garnacho has not really hit the ground running either.

Their summer signing Rasmus Hojlund has shown a lot of promise but has not exactly managed to convert them into goals. The Dane will definitely start scoring more though judging by how well he positions himself.

The thing with Rashford is he is kind of becoming a one-trick pony. Opposition defenders have started setting themselves up knowing that the Englishman will cut inside and try to score. He needs to start going wide more often.

Speaking in the pre-match presser as quoted by Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, here is what Erik ten Hag had to say about Rashford’s form

“Give him the trust and play him every game. That’s the only way. Most of the games he finishes every game, so I have a strong belief he will return to scoring a lot of goals”

The issue with Rashford for way too long now seems to be the fact that he is a confidence player. When he is performing well, he is high on confidence and this helps him to keep building on it. When the momentum breaks, he struggles.

Elite strikers in the world like Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe and even the ones previously like Cristiano Ronaldo never let their missed chances affect them mentally. This is something that Rashford has to work on.
