Pep Guardiola asks Manchester United to give time to Andre Onana

Pep Guardiola is a manager who is very well respected in the footballing fraternity and he has backed Andre Onana to come good for Manchester United if given some time to adapt.

When Guardiola talks, you listen. If he rates Andre Onana, it is not without its merits. The Cameroonian international has struggled to recapture the kind of form he showed for Inter Milan and Ajax at United so far.

Let’s make no mistake here. Onana is supremely talented. His performances for Ajax in previous seasons were excellent under Erik ten Hag. He then moved to Inter Milan and led them to the Champions League final.

To be fair to him, Onana has managed to improve his performances in recent games and positive signs were prevalent when he made that crucial last-minute penalty save against Copenhagen to keep Man United’s Champions League campaign afloat.

If Man United are to do well against their city rivals, then Onana will need to have a stupendous game. The likes of Erling Haaland, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Jeremy Doku and Julian Alvarez will make sure he has a very busy night.

Speaking about Onana ahead of the Manchester derby as quoted by Manchester Evening News, here is what Pep Guardiola had to say about the talented goalie

“He’s an exceptional player and now at United. Everyone needs time [to adapt to the Premier League], not just the managers but players, goalkeepers. Everyone. Sometimes people are quicker but I have a high opinion of him as a goalkeeper. Hopefully we can beat him, but before the game I always expect the best of the players we are going to face.”

Things are looking better for Man United in recent times but it is too early to make the call. The likes of Harry Maguire seem to be improving. However, against Man City, every single player will need to contribute to get the desired result.

At this stage, it will be a surprise if Man United beat Man City and a pleasant one at that. Pep Guardiola’s team though have shown that they are not exactly invincible, already losing two games in the league.
