Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag talks about the lack of goals
When you have an attack comprising of Rasmus Hojlund, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho and Facundo Pellistri, you are expected to score goals but surprisingly Manchester United have not managed to do that. Even Erik ten Hag concurs.
Somehow, they managed to score just 11 goals in nine Premier League games, whilst conceding 13. A negative goal difference is almost unheard of for a club of United’s stature and clearly, something is not working.
One can’t help but wonder if it has anything to do with the way Erik ten Hag sets his team up. Whilst it might partially be due to that, the bigger issue undoubtedly has to be the fact that the forwards have lacked form this season.
With the exception of Rasmus Hojlund, no other attacker has managed to catch the eye and even though the Dane’s overall play has impressed one and all, as the main striker, more goals are expected from him.
Marcus Rashford has been a shadow of the player who absolutely dazzled last season. Anthony Martial for all his injury woes last season still managed to score regularly when fit. The same cannot be said about the Frenchman this season.
Even Alejandro Garnacho who influenced so many games from the bench last time has struggled to do the same this season. Antony is the only one who has been consistent since last season – consistently underperforming.
Speaking in the pre-match presser as quoted by Manchester Evening News, here is what Erik ten Hag had to say
“The cooperation has to click, but we showed this week some examples where there are so many we have overload positions, going in overload position to the opponent’s goal and we don’t net or don’t even hit the target. We don’t have time to train this, we give some coaching and I’m convinced with the quality from our players that they will go and score more goals.”
Without scoring goals, there is no way we are surviving the derby against Manchester City. The Pep Guardiola-led team are one of the most ruthless oppositions in the Premier League and will absolutely trample us if they sense an opportunity.
