Manchester United talisman Scott McTominay emerges as an alternative for Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali
According to the Mirror, Newcastle United are set to see out the 2023-24 season sans Sandro Tonali and have earmarked Manchester United star Scott McTominay as a viable replacement.
Shortly after the Italian player’s summer transfer from AC Milan for £55 million, the player and his team have suffered greatly due to his involvement in a betting scandal. The 23-year-old was duly removed from his nation’s squad as a result, and he later admitted to law authorities that he had wagered on games while playing in Serie A.
McTominay, on the other hand has seen his stock rise following his goalscoring exploits of late. Once thought to be on his way out, the Scotsman’s return to form could delay his exit as he continues to demonstrate his worth despite United’s dismal situation. The 26-year-old has a mindset akin to many legendary United players who rose through the ranks of the team’s academy.
Therefore, we do believe that Eddie Howe could get the most out of the Scotsman—who made his Premier League debut five years ago—if Newcastle signed him. McTominay has played in the league 150 times and is no stranger to the English game.
Erik ten Hag hasn’t exactly welcomed the Scotland international as a starter for the squad but his recent upsurge in form will give the Dutchman something to think about. Therefore it’s unclear if he will allow McTominay leave in January, let alone to a direct top four rival.
It’s a major blow for Newcastle to lose a player like Tonali. This might make them desperate to sign a good player and looking at McTominay’s red hot form he can be an excellent choice. Whether they will make us an offer that cannot be refused remains to be seen.
