Manchester United star Harry Maguire praised Andre Onana after his heroic victory-securing penalty save.
Manchester United defender Harry Maguire heaped praise on Andre Onana for his last-minute heroism against FC Copenhagen. Onana made a critical penalty save as the Red Devils were holding onto a narrow 1-0 lead.
United won their first Champions League Group A game against Copenhagen 1-0 at Old Trafford. Maguire scored a second-half header for the Red Devils which ended up being the winner.
Onana’s save came at the last moment of the game after Scott McTominay conceded a late penalty with a high-boot offence. The 27-year-old had a terrible start to his United career and made errors in the opening two Champions League fixtures.
Maguire told Manchester United’s Official Site that Onana’s save was a high-standard save that deserves the applause he is getting. He said:
“It was a big save, a big moment by a big goalkeeper and he deserves that. I know it’s a big moment for him. And it’s not only a penalty save, it’s a really high-standard penalty save. It’s a great save. I’m really pleased for him.”
United signed Onana from Serie A side Inter Milan during the Summer transfer window. The Cameroon international has a huge shoe to fill as he succeeded United legend David De Gea.
The 27-year-old was a pivotal part of the Inter side that reached the Champions League final last season. Onana rejoined United manager Erik ten Hag after playing for the Dutchman during their time together at Ajax.
Both Onana and Maguire have faced severe criticism from fans and football pundits during their time at United. The England defender understands that the pressure comes hard and fast at Old Trafford due to the high expectations.
