Former Manchester United captain Harry Maguire describes how he felt after scoring and helping the team win
Manchester United emerged victorious on Tuesday beating FC Copenhagen 1-0 owing to a second-half Harry Maguire goal and a stoppage time saving of a penalty kick. This was United’s first Champions League victory since defeating Villarreal 2-0 away on November 23, 2021.
Maguire said after the much-needed victory (Manchester United Club media) :
“I just knew I had to hit the target from so close. It was an amazing feeling to score in front of the Stretford End in the Champions League and it was a big moment for myself, but more importantly, a big moment for the team.”
And the winning run that extends is once again achieved by Harry Maguire, the constant whipping boy. Lately, Maguire has shined after putting in starts and playing impressively in United’s last four games now which saw us defeat Sheffield United and Brentford in the Premier League and FC Copenhagen in the Champions League.
Since Erik ten Hag took over the team, the England international has had difficulty becoming the starting centre defender. The Dutchman’s current top choices for centre-backs are Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane. However, both of the starting defenders are out due to chronic ailments.
When Ten Hag has all of their defenders available, we will have to wait and see what Maguire’s role will be.
In the January matchup against Manchester City, he was on the bench while Lindelof and Luke Shaw got things going. He’s back in the mix now that circumstances have allowed him to, but he’s done enough to earn his spot for the derby this weekend.
When United play Maguire, the squad wins more games. Maguire made a strong case for himself during the October international break. As evidenced by the Red Devils’ 20 goals allowed in 12 games this season, he was correct.

We can only hope that Maguire and Andre Onana who have been criticised for their every mistake can silence their critics the same way they did last night. It was a crucial game which we won and we hope that we can qualify for the knockout stages.
