Football pundit, Carlton Palmer believes Sunderland will give themselves an excellent chance of securing promotion to the Premier League if they manage to sign Manchester United star Amad Diallo on loan.

The 21-year-old spent the 2022-23 season on loan at The Stadium of Light and was among the Black Cats’ best players. Diallo played 42 games for them all season, scoring 14 goals and assisting four more as Sunderland fell to Luton Town in the Championship playoffs.

Tony Mowbray’s side are currently fourth in the second tier, 11 points off leaders Leicester City. However, there is not much separating them from the teams below them and every point will matter when it comes to the final standings.

One can argue that Sunderland can give their promotion hopes a shot in the arm if they reinforce the squad in January. According to TeamTalk, the Black Cats remain keen on reigniting their pursuit of Diallo in the 2024 January transfer window.

United were ready to send the player out on loan last summer but a knee injury saw him stay put at Old Trafford. Given Antony’s fall from grace and Jacon Sancho’s cold war with Erik ten Hag, it remains to be seen if the Red Devils will now sanction a mid-season exit for their 21-year-old star.

While it is still at the rumour stage, Carlton Palmer feels it is an optimistic step in the right direction for Sunderland in their bid to return to the top flight. He revealed his thoughts on the matter in an exclusive interview with Football League World.

“This is fantastic news for Sunderland as they sit fourth in the table.”

Jack Clarke is the beating heart behind Sunderland’s results this season but the young winger continues to be linked with a January move to Burnley and Brentford. Losing him will blunt the Black Cats’ attack and Mowbray will be aware of it. However, Palmer adds that should the club sign Diallo, the Ivory Coast ace will be more than an adequate replacement.

“There’s uncertainty surrounding one of their star players – Jack Clarke. If Sunderland were to let Jack go then they have the perfect replacement in Diallo.”

Diallo certainly can do with regular game time, especially given the lack of match fitness when he returns from injury. Sending him out on loan once again could prove to be a wise decision for Manchester United.
