Former Manchester United player Gary Neville makes his prediction where Manchester United might finish
In a recent revelation to the Metro, former Manchester United player Gary Neville has peered into his crystal ball and made a bold prediction about where the team might find themselves at the end of the season.
United’s current form has been undeniably bleak, leaving fans and players alike in search of a glimmer of hope. However, the unexpected resurgence against Brentford has reignited the flame of optimism.
Gary Neville, known for his candid commentary, suggests that Manchester United may not secure a top-five finish this season based on his observations of the team’s recent performances. He said via the Gary Neville Podcast
“I don’t think Manchester United will finish in the top five this season.”
“I think they are way off it. And I’m surprised because seven or eight weeks ago, I had them third, But honestly from what I see at the moment, I don’t think the goalkeeper is settled in, I think he should have saved the one yesterday so that is a problem.”
“If you’re goalkeeper is not settled in and there is a bit of instability around that, it does create a big problem. I’ve had that at United. So United, not for me. Chelsea, I think are probably nearer to it if they can go on a run because they have got some really good young talented players. Their age is a lot better than United’s squad”
Neville’s insight is thought-provoking. The goalkeeper’s recurrent mistakes can indeed hinder the squad’s ability to regain momentum after falling into a deficit. Regarding young talent within the team, there’s room for improvement. Alejandro Garnacho and Hannibal Mejbri are the only two young players consistently starting for Manchester United.
However, when compared to Chelsea’s squad, it’s evident that we are lacking in quality and numbers. Chelsea boast of talents like Nicolas Jackson, Armando Broja, and Cole Palmer, all aged 22 or younger.
Currently, Ten Hag’s squad languishes in 9th place on the league table, having endured four losses out of eight matches played this season. The Dutchman is under mounting pressure due to the team’s poor performance and his decision-making.
With defeats against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray in their opening group matches, United’s prospects of advancing to the Champions League knockout stages are already fading.
Fortunately, the 2024–25 season brings a new Champions League structure, with the Premier League set to qualify five teams for the tournament. This may offer Manchester United a lifeline.
