Manchester United considered signing Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2022 but did not return this summer
Fabrizio Romano, in his exclusive column for the Daily Briefing, reported that Manchester United expressed interest in signing Jeremie Frimpong. The Red Devils considered the Bayer Leverkusen fullback during the summer transfer window of 2022 but did not return during the 2023 summer transfer window.
The 22-year-old has been the main outlet for attack from the right-back position under the manager Xabi Alonso at Leverkusen.
Frimpong has appeared in eight games for the German club while contributing one goal and four assists this season.
Romano talked about the Red Devil’s intention to sign a rightback when manager Erik ten Hag joined United. He said:
“Jeremie Frimpong – Another player who’s been on Manchester United’s radar, Jeremie Frimpong has just signed a new Bayer Leverkusen contract after being considered by the Red Devils last year, but not this summer.”
Frimpong has the pace, creativity, and technical ability to be a consistent threat from the right flank. The Dutchman has impressive ball-carrying ability and he is unpredictable as he can cut inside or go down the byline.
Whereas, Ten Hag had the option of Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka when he joined the Red Devils. Dalot and Wan-Bissaka are solid full-back options defensively while offensively they are good but not up to the expectations of top clubs.
Wan-Bissaka fell down the pecking order due to inconsistencies and nagging injuries but managed to earn his way back up. The Englishman, currently sidelined with injury, continues to be the United manager’s primary choice.

We don’t know if Ten Hag would want to reconsider the option of Frimpong given that he brings something different. The United boss currently prioritizes the left flank, as injuries have sidelined his natural options. Wan-Bissaka has improved in the attacking aspect of his game under the guidance of Ten Hag. However, Frimpong remains a very attractive prospect and it will be a costly business to lure him from Leverkusen.
