Manchester United legend Gary Neville calls the club a “graveyard” for the managers and the players.
Manchester United legend Gary Neville told talkSPORT (h/t Manchester Evening News) that the club is a graveyard for footballing and managerial careers.
United have lost six out of the 10 games they have played in all competitions this season. The torrid start has brought a lot of scrutiny and criticism from football experts and fans.
The Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag is currently in his second season at the club. The Dutchman helped United end their six-year trophy drought in his first season with Carabao Cup win. Furthermore, Ten Hag guided the club back to Champions League football and fans expected better things this season.
Neville shared his sympathy towards the manager and the players while pointing the blame at the club’s hierarchy and decision-makers. He said:
“I feel very sorry for the manager, I know a lot of people will say he’s got to do a lot better, and that’s fine, he’s the Manchester United manager, but there are a lot of big problems at the club that managers have found over the last ten years. It’s become a graveyard for coaches and players”
The 48-year-old has been a stern critic of United ownership along with the majority of the Red Devil supporters. The Glazers have faced several protests from the Old Trafford fanbase since taking over the club in 2005.
United have topped the spending table in the past decade globally. The Glazers have let the club invest £1.19bn more than they have recouped through players’ sales.
The club has granted Ten Hag sufficient power in the transfer market to sign the players according to his needs. The Red Devils faced restrictions due to financial fair play rules (FFP) but continued a sufficient level of spending.

Neville has made many valid points and United managers and players have struggled with off-field controversies and instability. However, we think that Ten Hag needs to take responsibility from here on. The Dutchman deserves time and patience from the fanbase and the club hierarchy which he is getting as for now. United hope to get a series of good results to save their season as failure is never acceptable at Old Trafford.
