New Manchester United captain Bruno Fernades makes admission about his new role
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag chose Bruno Fernandes to replace Harry Maguire as new United captain before the 2023-24 Premier League season began.
The decision was made as Maguire featured less in the starting 11 last season, making just 8 league starts.
Fernandes, on the other hand, raked up more than 5,000 minutes last season. The Portuguese midfielder played the most games than any player in Europe’s top five leagues showing incredible durability.
The attacking midfielder spoke about the captaincy to United’s official media (h/t Manchester Evening News). He said:
“I see it more as an honour than a responsibility. It’s obviously a responsibility being captain of this massive club, but for me, it’s more of an honour than that. So, it won’t change anything. I want to be a better player.
“I want to be lifting trophies even more now I’m captain because you get those special moments. We have a lot of leaders in the team, we have a lot of people capable of that work and that helps me get everyone on the same page.”
Fernandes has made 189 appearances for the Red Devils so far, contributing 65 goals and 55 assists for the club. The 29-year-old would like to continue leading by example by racking up more goals and assisting the team as captain.
The Red Devils are currently 11th in the Premier League table due to an inconsistent start to their season. They have 4 games where they lost two and won two with Fernandes featuring in all 4 matches.
United would be looking towards their new captain to inspire them back to a more consistent form. Rest assured, Fernandes’s durability and high performances are always appreciated by United’s loyal followers at Old Trafford.

Fernandes has shown gratitude for the trust that is placed in him by the Dutch boss. The new captain’s ambition to lift trophies is parallel with the ambitions of the Red Devil fans and manager alike. He has the attitude and hunger that is needed from a Red Devils captain.
Some have questioned his moaning on the pitch when it comes to refereeing decisions not going his team’s way, but that is only because he has the mentality where he just wants to win.
