Chelsea legend John Terry jumps to the defence of Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount after recent backlash from Blues fans
Former Blues legend John Terry has supported the choice made by Mason Mount to depart Chelsea and join Manchester United this summer. He also urged the fans to ‘not be too harsh’ on him.
Despite being a lifelong Chelsea supporter, the 24-year-old midfielder left Stamford Bridge during the latest transfer window, following a lengthy contract issue with the club.
Eventually, United secured his services with a £60 million deal. The English star has faced criticism from his former club’s fans for his decision to leave following the well-known dispute with the Blues.
While at West Londoners, Mount made 195 appearances and contributed 33 goals and 37 assists. His presence played a role in Chelsea’s Champions League victory in 2021.
The fans were upset with his decision to move to a direct Premier League rival. However, former Chelsea captain and club icon Terry has urged the fans to give a warm reception to their academy graduate when he returns to Stamford Bridge with United in early April.
The former centre-back suggests that there might be additional factors at play in Mount’s departure that haven’t been widely disclosed, and he claims that there are ‘always two sides to a story’.
While talking to Knockout Events (as quoted by the Mirror), Terry said:
“Mase is proper Chels through and through. There’s always two sides to a story and I know the other side to it. I’m not going to air that tonight but there’s another side to the story. Let’s not be too harsh on him when he comes back.”
Unsurprisingly, Mount’s transfer to Old Trafford has created controversy. As a beloved homegrown player and a regular on the England national team, his departure was a bitter pill to swallow for fans who had followed his career since he was a young player.
It’s expected that emotions at Stamford Bridge will be mixed, which is understandable. When someone, regardless of their huge contributions or love for the club, joins a rival team, there’s inevitably a surge of criticism.
The ongoing debate among the fanbase will revolve around whether the midfielder felt pressured to leave or if he genuinely desired to move away.
This issue will persist for a while, and it will be interesting to see how the Blues fans react when his name is announced at Stamford Bridge.
Recently, Mount’s brother lashed out at the United Kingdom’s talkSPORT radio station for their negative reporting on his brother.
The English star has yet to find the net for his new team. Unfortunately, he has also recently suffered an injury that is expected to keep him out of action until after the international break.
Ten Hag would be happy to have his player, even if it’s a loss to Chelsea. He admires Mount’s versatility and believes that he could be a very important player for the Red Devils this season.
