Manchester United showing interest in versatile AS Roma left-back Leonardo Spinazzola ahead of the transfer deadline
As per Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Manchester United have reached out to AS Roma to inquire about their star left-back Leonardo Spinazzola.
The Red Devils are considering making a move for the 30-year-old Italian player due to worries about the fitness of Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.
It’s no secret that Erik ten Hag’s side are looking to acquire a new left-back before the summer transfer window ends, as it’s crucial for his United team’s chances of competing in the Premier League.
While securing a defensive midfielder is likely the top priority for the club before September 1, they shouldn’t overlook the necessity of a high-quality left-back or left wing-back.
With Shaw and Malacia likely sidelined until at least November, it appears that Ten Hag has been exploring the market to find his ideal replacement.
Man United have already looked after various options for left-backs, including Tottenham Hotspur’s Sergio Reguilon, Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella, Brentford’s Rico Henry, and Barcelona’s Marcos Alonso.
The Red Devils are now eyeing Roma’s defender as their latest left-back target. Spinazzola has also received offers from Saudi Pro League side Al-Shabab.
The attacking-oriented full-back faced a setback in his career due to a severe ACL injury suffered while representing Italy in the 2021 Euros. Italy went on to win the tournament, defeating England in the final at Wembley.
In the previous season, Spinazzola made 26 appearances in Serie A for Roma, scoring two goals – one in the league and the other in the Europa League, where they were defeated by Sevilla in the final.
With just one year remaining on his current contract at the Stadio Olimpico, this could be a significant factor if Roma decides to allow him to join Man United.
His agent has previously described this experienced Italian star as a ‘world-class’ player, and he undeniably belongs to the top tier.
Despite touching the age of 30, he possesses exceptional speed and embodies the typical Italian style of defending – a relentless tackler who grants no space to opponents.
Adding him to the United squad would bring in some much-needed leadership qualities. Spinazzola has achieved success, including a Serie A title with Juventus, a Conference League winner with Roma and a European Championship title with Italy.
It remains to be seen whether his parent club would be reluctant to part ways with their key player if United expressed interest.
