Tottenham Hotspur are willing to sell Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to Manchester United this summer
According to the Telegraph [subscription required] (h/t the Manchester Evening News), Manchester United are linked with a surprising move for Tottenham Hotspur defensive midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this summer.
The Red Devils are keen on strengthening their midfield, with the window set to close on Friday.
Hojbjerg wasn’t initially the top choice on United’s list, but there’s a possibility of a late move as the club has been presented with the opportunity to initiate talks for a potential deal.
Tottenham acquired the Danish international from Southampton three years ago, during Jose Mourinho’s tenure. However, the new manager, Ange Postecoglou, is open to the possibility of the 28-year-old leaving.
Hojbjerg has featured in 147 games for Tottenham. Although he was strongly linked to Atletico Madrid, that deal didn’t come to fruition, and Man United are now a possible destination.
The defensive midfielder has been a substitute in two of Tottenham’s three Premier League matches this season, with manager Postecoglou favouring Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr as starters.
Meanwhile, United have experienced midfield issues in their opening three Premier League fixtures, which have now been affected by Mason Mount’s month-long absence.
While Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat has been a long-standing target, a deal hasn’t been agreed upon. Ryan Gravenberch has also been a target, but an offer must be made.
Erik ten Hag managed Hojbjerg at Bayern Munich, aligning with his criteria for signing his former players.
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola once praised the Tottenham midfielder’s skill at winning “second balls,” a crucial aspect of launching successful transitions on the field.
The defensive midfielder brings a wealth of Premier League experience and an aggressive playing style that Man United have been missing in their first three fixtures.
With Casemiro as the sole defensive midfielder, the Red Devils have looked vulnerable to opposition counter-attacks.
While Amrabat could be a welcome addition, Hojbjerg offers a similar profile to the Moroccan international, with the added benefit of not needing time to adapt to English football.
