Jonny Evans to be offered one-year contract at Manchester United
Manchester United are set to offer Jonny Evans a one-year contract to extend his stay at the club beyond this month, according to The Telegraph (Subscription Required).
Initially, the centre-back was only training with the Red Devils’ youth side. But the Northern Ireland international was handed a short-term deal by the Old Trafford side to feature during the United States pre-season tour.
The 35-year-old impressed Erik ten Hag during training sessions. As things stand, the Dutch manager feels the veteran defender could provide experience in United’s backline.
To that end, Evans and the Red Devils are now in discussions about remaining at the club until the end of the season. Both parties are likely to reach a resolution soon regarding the same.
Having made his way through the youth ranks at the Old Trafford side, the centre-back was a key squad member for us for several years before leaving for West Bromwich Albion in the summer of 2015.
Subsequently, in 2018, the Northern Irish national made his way to Leicester City. The defender formed a solid part of the Foxes’ backline for a few years and won the FA Cup with them.
However, in the previous campaign, Evans was on the sidelines for the most part as the King Power Stadium side struggled. In the end, the East Midlands-based club were unable to survive the drop and are now in the Championship.
At United, the central defensive area has been entrusted mostly to Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez by Ten Hag. We also have Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire in our ranks.
