Chris Sutton backs Mason Mount to thrive at Manchester United

Speaking on the ‘It’s All Coming Up’ preview show (h/t The Daily Mail), former Scottish international, Chris Sutton has backed Mason Mount to come good at Manchester United.

This comes after the English ace suffered a difficult start to life at the Theatre of Dreams. Mount, who joined from Chelsea in the summer had a debut to forget against Wolverhampton Wanderers and was largely anonymous on the field.

This prompted Ian Ladyman to question whether the midfielder had the ability to develop into a leader at United. Sutton, to his credit, backed our new number seven and believes he will excel in time.

Sutton went on to add that Mount has had naysayers question him for most of his career only for him to come back strong and give them a befitting reply time and again. He believes it is only a matter of time before Mount once again reminds his detractors of his abilities.

“Mount has been one of those players throughout his career who always seems to take a fair bit of flack and he has to prove himself time and time again. You know, Gareth Southgate loves him. Frank Lampard loves him.”

Donning the number seven jersey at Old Trafford is an honour that has been bestowed on some of our most legendary players. Handing it to Mount this summer shows the confidence the club has in his abilities and it is imperative that we too support him in the endeavour.

While Mount did struggle against Wolves, it is but one game and that too his debut. Sutton is right in assessing that it is a small sample size for us to question the 24-year-old abilities.

“I think we’re sort of writing him off after one game, essentially. I think over time he will prove himself. He’s gone into a midfield with the likes of Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes – two experienced players, but I think that over time he’ll be absolutely fine.”

Given time and patience, there is little doubt that the English ace will come good and do justice to the fee we paid for him in the summer. It is still early days and he will take some adjusting to the expectations of donning a red jersey.

With a trip to Tottenham Hotspur up next, Mount will return to the familiar scenery in London, where he can hopefully make a difference. Scoring the winner at the N17 will certainly endear him to the Man United supporters and shut up the doomsayers. After all, the onus is on him to perform on the field.
