Rio Ferdinand urges Manchester United against signing Everton midfielder Amadou Onana
Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand has urged the club against the signing of Everton star Amadou Onana in the ongoing transfer window.
The Red Devils are interested in acquiring the services of the midfielder this summer. To that end, the Old Trafford side have already opened talks with the Toffees to get a hold of the Belgium international’s signature.
However, speaking on Vibe with Five (h/t Metro), Ferdinand, who spent 12 successful years at United, does not believe the 22-year-old fits the club’s profile. The ex-defender has branded him the next Marouane Fellaini.
“McTominay upgrade? What is he, tell me what he is? Onana is not a holder, he’s not a destroyer. Every single attribute listed, that’s not Ten Hag to me. Ten Hag’s about playing through the lines, playing off angles.
“I think he has really good attributes but I don’t think for Man United. It’s like Fellaini, it’s like buying Fellaini again for Manchester United.”
Fellaini signed for the Red Devils in the summer of 2013 from Everton. The Belgian had established himself as an impressive box-to-box player at the Goodison Park side before moving to Manchester.
However, the 35-year-old never really got going at the Old Trafford side. In his four-and-a-half years at the club, the midfielder made 177 appearances in all competitions, scoring 22 goals and providing 12 assists.
Everton got Onana from LOSC Lille last summer. He had an impressive debut campaign at the Merseyside outfit. However, the midfielder mostly played in the number eight role for the Toffees.
The Belgian showcased his athleticism and industry in the engine room. But United have already signed Mason Mount this summer and have Christian Eriksen in their ranks for that position.
What we seemingly lack is adequate cover for Casemiro. We signed the Brazil international last summer and he has been pivotal to our success. Scott McTominay is at Erik ten Hag’s disposal, but he leaves a lot to be desired as a defensive midfielder. Fred has joined Fenerbahce on a permanent transfer.

Therefore, instead of focusing on Onana, it would be wise for the Old Trafford side to consider other targets. The Red Devils arguably require another enforcer in the engine room.
