Summer signing Rasmus Hojlund to take the number 17 jersey which is vacated by departing Fred
According to Evening Standard, new Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund will don the number 17 jersey which is left by a departing Fred.
United announced the new squad numbers for all the players except the latest summer signing. It felt curious to an extent.
But, Fred, who used to wear the number 17 shirt, is now heading to Turkey to play for Fenerbahce. Hojlund will take over that as and when he makes his United debut.
The Danish international is still recovering from a back injury and won’t be available for the opening game of the season against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday night.
Injuries of that nature do take time to heal. Doctors make extra sure before sending a professional player out again because the back is such an important component of the body when playing any sport.
Till Hojlund gets completely fit, we await his debut in a Manchester United jersey, wearing number 17. Erik ten Hag may start with Marcus Rashford as a number nine in the meantime.
Although the England international is at his best when asked to play as a left winger in the half space, he is good enough now to play centrally and score goals.
The other option for the manager could be to start Jadon Sancho as a false nine and keep Rashford in his favoured position.
Sancho was tried centrally in a few pre-season games that gave us an indication that new things could be tried when the actual season starts.
