Manchester United have seen their opening bid for Benjamin Pavard rejected by Bayern Munich
As per a tweet from Sky Germany correspondent Florian Plettenberg, Bayern Munich have rejected an opening bid by Manchester United for French defender Benjamin Pavard.
It is revealed that United will push hard to sign the 2018 World Cup winner and verbal agreement is already in place. The player is also keen to leave the German champions and join the Red Devils.
United have not made a defensive addition to the squad in this summer window. On top of that, they are close to losing backup centre-back Harry Maguire to West Ham United.
They were initially in the race to sign Napoli defender Kim Min-jae but Bayern stole a march and got him.
Pavard is a versatile defender who can operate both as a centre-back and a fullback. The 27-year-old began his career at Lille before moving to Stuttgart and eventually to Bayern in 2019.
If we look at the United squad, they have enough options at right-back with Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka competing for that position.
But, in central defence, there isn’t much behind Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane. Victor Lindelof is a decent option but Erik ten Hag could do with more options.
Pavard, although may not be the best in the world in his position, is an experienced player who has the desired quality to enhance the standard of the squad going into a season where United would need depth to compete in all competitions, including the Champions League.

Ten Hag’s men begin their campaign with a home against troubled Wolves at Old Trafford on Monday. Any business done to potentially get Pavard won’t make him available for that. But, let’s hope it is eventually done in due course of time.
