Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag considering Torino defender Perr Schuurs as Harry Maguire’s replacement
According to 90Min (h/t the Manchester Evening News), Manchester United are considering various alternatives to replace the departing Harry Maguire, including Torino centre-back Perr Schuurs.
It is said that Schuurs is being talked about within the United camp and is being considered a potential addition in their pursuit of a new defender.
The 23-year-old, who played under Ten Hag at Ajax, boasts an impressive record of 92 matches under the manager’s guidance.
During his time at Ajax, the Dutch star contributed three goals and four assists before his transfer to Torino last summer.
Earning recognition in Italy, the solid centre-back has left a positive impression and has been praised by manager Ivan Juric for his all-around defensive abilities.
However, Torino are not eager to part ways, and they would be willing to ask for €40 million (£34.5 million) for their key player, a valuation that hasn’t been met by any interested party so far.
In this scenario, United might seize the opportunity, which could lead to a reunion between Schuurs and Ten Hag at Old Trafford.
However, United are not the only interested party here, as Tottenham Hotspur are also keeping tabs on the defender.
Having showcased his skills in Italy, the Dutch player is capturing significant attention from the Premier League.
Ten Hag’s familiarity with Schuurs from their Ajax days might lead him to consider the defender a viable contender against Raphael Varane.
It’s no secret that the manager has shown a tendency to acquire players he has previously worked with, like Andre Onana, Lisandro Martinez, Antony, and his current target, Sofyan Amrabat.
The Dutch centre-back aligns with this approach, making him a noteworthy prospect for United supporters to monitor this summer.
Schuurs possesses decent speed and is very comfortable when operating within a high defensive line, a style he embraced both during his time at Torino in the previous season and earlier at Ajax.
His physical attributes might position him as a more suitable option compared to some other players who have been considered by the Red Devils.
