Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi on Manchester United radar to replace Harry Maguire

Manchester United have Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi on their radar as a replacement for Harry Maguire, according to the Daily Mail (h/t Manchester Evening News).

As things stand, the former Leicester City star is close to making an exit from the Red Devils this summer. The Old Trafford side have accepted a £30 million bid for the centre-back from West Ham United in the ongoing transfer window.

The 30-year-old has lost the captain’s armband recently and has fallen down the pecking order since Erik ten Hag’s arrival. Therefore, it would not be a surprise to see the England international part ways with the club in the coming weeks.

In that case, United plan to add reinforcements to the backline. Guehi is one of the four players on the Red Devils’ shortlist. Bayern Munich’s Benjamin Pavard, Nice’s deferred Jean-Clair Todibo and Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba are being eyed by the club.

The Palace centre-back made his way through the youth ranks at Chelsea. However, over the last few years, the English national has come into his own at the Selhurst Park side.

The 23-year-old was a key player for the Eagles in the 2022/23 term. While the London-based club struggled to perform under Patrick Vieira, the defender thrived with the return of Roy Hodgson.

Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez were Erik ten Hag’s go-to centre-backs in the previous campaign. The two World Cup winners have formed a brilliant partnership at the Old Trafford side.

Last season, Victor Lindelof looked to have the gaffer’s trust to play as backup. The Swedish national was regularly called upon in the absence of our first-choice defenders. Luke Shaw was also deployed in central defence to good effect on a few occasions by the Dutch manager.

However, with the possible departure of Maguire, we will evidently need to add depth to our ranks. Varane has been injury prone since making his move to Manchester. Whether Guehi will be the chosen one by the Red Devils remains to be seen.
