Manchester United shot-stopper Nathan Bishop joins Sunderland in a three-year deal
As revealed by the club’s official website, Sunderland have finalised the signing of goalkeeper Nathan Bishop from Manchester United for an undisclosed fee.
The English shot-stopper is happy to sign for a ‘great club’ and ‘wants to earn the right to play’ as he awaits a new opportunity with the Black Cats.
Bishop has signed a three-year contract with Sunderland, and he is expected to be a backup option to Anthony Patterson for their Championship campaign, which kicks off on Sunday.
Upon his arrival at the Stadium of Light, the 23-year-old expressed his excitement about joining a team that reached the play-off semi-finals last season, showcasing his enthusiasm for the new opportunity.
While speaking to his new club, he said:
“You see the direction that the Club is going, playing young players and allowing them to express themselves and push on in a great league. I think that is so exciting, so I want to come in and earn the right to play for such a great team and a great Club.”
Bishop joined Man United from Southend United in 2020 but did not feature in any competitive matches for the senior team.
During the 2021-22 season, he was loaned out to League Two club Mansfield Town, where he made 46 appearances and kept 16 clean sheets, helping them reach the playoff final.
In the following season, the young keeper was initially expected to be loaned out again, but he ended up making only nine appearances for United’s Under-21 team, participating in the Premier League 2 and the EFL Trophy.
Previously, Bishop was part of Erik ten Hag’s pre-season squad for their tour of the United States this summer.
During one of the matches, he made headlines for a challenge on Wrexham’s Paul Mullin, resulting in the striker suffering a punctured lung during United’s defeat to the League Two side.
It was also his last appearance for the Red Devils. Sunderland have now grabbed the young keeper after tracking him for some time.
Bishop’s arrival is aimed at offering backup and competition to the first-choice goalkeeper, Patterson. With last season’s backup, Alex Bass, having recently gone on loan to AFC Wimbledon, the new signing’s presence will strengthen the goalkeeping options for the team.
The Black Cats will now be focused on incorporating the English keeper into their main squad ahead of the upcoming Championship season, which is set to begin on August 6 against Ipswich Town at the Stadium of Lights.
Meanwhile, United will be happy to offload one of their unwanted players. Bishop was surplus to requirements, and due to his limited chances, it was wise for the club to let him revive his career elsewhere.
