Manchester United linked with a surprise move for Southampton star Romeo Lavia this summer

According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United are now in the running to secure the services of Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia.

The 19-year-old had an impressive season with the Saints in the Premier League following his move from Manchester City last year.

Although he had limited first-team opportunities with Pep Guardiola’s side, the teenager made a significant impact during his 34 appearances for Southampton last season.

Despite Lavia’s impressive performances, his parent club faced relegation to the Championship, managing only six wins in the Premier League.

The club are seeking a fee of £50 million for the young talent, but they will have to pay Man City 20% of the transfer fee due to a sell-on clause in Lavia’s contract.

However, United will have to face intense competition from Liverpool, who have been actively pursuing the young talent throughout the summer transfer window.

Last season, the Red Devils experienced a positive change in their performance following the appointment of Erik ten Hag as their manager. As a result of their improved form, they finished third in the Premier League, earning them a place in the Champions League for the upcoming season.

Excitement is building as United prepares for the upcoming season, coupled with the recent signings of Mason Mount from Chelsea and Andre Onana from Inter Milan. Additionally, a deal for Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund has been confirmed.

With the focus now shifting to midfield reinforcements, United’s fans eagerly await further developments under the Dutchman’s leadership.

The Daily Mail has stated that the English giants are showing interest in signing Lavia but may need to sell players first to raise funds.

The potential departures of midfielders Scott McTominay, Fred, and Donny van de Beek have been linked, and the funds generated from their sales could contribute towards acquiring Lavia. However, he may not come for cheap, almost double Sofyan Amrabat’s price.

Southampton are anticipating a hugely important week in the pursuit of Lavia, as Liverpool are also competing for his signature.

Jurgen Klopp’s side, having secured deals for Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to Saudi Arabia, now have funds to make an improved offer for the Belgian star in their bid to finalise the transfer.

Additionally, Chelsea have also been keeping an eye on the young midfielder, indicating that the competition for the transfer could escalate in the upcoming days.

The deal may look like a smart one to materialise. but it may not suit United’s financial plans. The long-awaited transfer of Amrabat seems to have an upper hand in this case.

The African star is available for just £25m (€30m), which is far less when compared to that of Lavia. Also, the 26-year-old’s experience makes him a ready-made player for the team.

Although Lavia could be an excellent signing for the future, it may be wise for United to look into their pockets before cashing in on players.

There may be changes to the club’s transfer plans if they fail to rope in Amrabat, but at this moment, it looks like they already have their eyes on their key target.
