Andre Onana wants more from Manchester United defender Harry Maguire after spat in Borussia Dortmund loss
Manchester United shot-stopper Andre Onana wanted to demand more from Harry Maguire after their spat in the loss to Borussia Dortmund.
The Red Devils took on the Bundesliga giants at the Allegiant Stadium on 31 July. In the first half, the Old Trafford side took the lead through Diogo Dalot but slipped up in the final minutes before the break and were behind.
Tom Heaton started in goal for United. Subsequently, Onana came on at half-time. The Cameroonian had to jump into action quickly after Maguire’s poor decision-making forced him to make a couple of saves.
The 27-year-old was heated after and made his feelings clear on the pitch. Speaking to MUTV (h/t Manchester Evening News), the shot-stopper expects the England international to do better in certain situations.
“I try to demand a lot from him because I know he is a good player. He’s one of the captains of the team. He’s big, he’s good with the ball so I will demand him a lot. He’s a great guy, I have a good relationship with him.”
Antony went on to equalise for United in the 52nd minute. Erik ten Hag proceeded to make a host of changes at the hour mark, which was detrimental to our performance.
The team looked disjointed after the substitutions and put in a poor show. Youssoufa Moukoko ended up restoring Dortmund’s lead in the 71st minute and the game ended in a 3-2 loss for us.
Onana was signed by the Red Devils in the ongoing transfer window after the departure of David de Gea. The Spaniard was our number one for over a decade but his contract expired at the end of last month.
Unlike the 32-year-old, the Cameroonian has already showcased a commanding presence in the box and looks comfortable in possession. Therefore, he will evidently fit right into the Dutch manager’s system.

As for Maguire, he has lost his influence in the team under Ten Hag. The 30-year-old lost the captaincy recently as well. It remains to be seen whether Onana and the English centre-back will be playing together in the upcoming campaign.
