West Ham United unlikely to match Manchester United defender Harry Maguire price tag
Premier League rivals West Ham United are unlikely to make another proposal to sign Harry Maguire from Manchester United, according to The Athletic (Subscription Required) [h/t Mirror].
The Hammers made a £20 million offer recently to acquire the services of the England international. They also wanted to take the defender on loan from the Red Devils initially. However, both of those bids were rejected by the Old Trafford side.
Considering Man United’s £50 million valuation and the centre-back’s £200,000-a-week salary, the Irons are not expected to be able to afford his signature.
As for the 30-year-old, he is reluctant to join West Ham as well. The former Leicester City star wants to play for a ‘bigger club’ in the upcoming campaign.
Maguire has been at the Old Trafford side since the summer of 2019. However, over the last two seasons, the defender’s form has drastically dipped. As a result, he has lost his place in Erik ten Hag’s team.
In the previous campaign, the English national was a bit-part player, starting in just eight PL matches. Recently, the centre-back has also been stripped of the captain’s armband by the Dutch manager.
Despite Maguire’s influence at the Red Devils dwindling, he has still been a key player for Gareth Southgate. For the Three Lions, the defender has put in decent displays in the last few major tournaments.
At Man United, Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane seem to be Ten Hag’s preferred duo at the back. Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw also played in central defence ahead of our former captain on a number of occasions last season.
