Jonny Evans could be handed contract by Manchester United after impressing in pre-season

Manchester United could hand Jonny Evans a contract to remain at the club beyond the pre-season after some impressive displays, according to The Sun.

The Northern Ireland national has played a part in the Red Devils’ friendly fixtures against Leeds United and Olympique Lyon, which we won. Against Wrexham, the veteran defender featured alongside the youngsters and put in a decent shift despite our 3-1 loss.

Evans was excluded from the squad to face Real Madrid on 27 July at the NRG Stadium. But he came on as a substitute at the hour mark in our 3-2 loss to Borussia Dortmund on 31 July at the Allegiant Stadium in Nevada, Las Vegas.

The 35-year-old initially signed a short-term deal to be a part of the team for the first two matches during pre-season. However, the centre-back has subsequently made a place for himself for the rest of the friendlies in America.

In the summer of 2018, the Northern Irish national joined Leicester City and played for them until his contract with the Foxes expired this summer. At the King Power Stadium side, the defender enjoyed some of his best years.

Now, Evans has caught the eye of Erik ten Hag. The centre-back is in good shape and his leadership qualities and ability on the ball have not been left unnoticed. As a result, the Northern Irish national could be handed a new deal.

Evans made his way through the youth ranks at United and previously spent a decade at the club before moving to West Bromwich Albion in the summer of 2015.

At the Old Trafford side right now, the backline is stacked. However, Eric Bailly and Harry Maguire could part ways with the Red Devils in the coming weeks.

The Northern Irish national has prior experience of playing for the Manchester-based club and has arguably matured a lot since his first spell. Therefore, it would not be a surprise to see Ten Hag count on the centre-back to add depth to our ranks for the upcoming campaign.
