FC Porto shot-stopper Diogo Costa eyed by Manchester United to improve squad depth
Manchester United are looking to acquire the services of FC Porto shot-stopper Diogo Costa to increase the competition in the team, according to Fichajes.net.
David de Gea recently parted ways with the Red Devils after his contract with the club expired at the end of last month. Subsequently, we have signed Andre Onana in the ongoing transfer window. The Cameroonian has featured for us during pre-season and has commanded the box admirably.
However, Erik ten Hag has put forth the Portuguese goalkeeper’s name on the table as well. The Old Trafford side are considering adding the 23-year-old to their ranks to add more depth in between the sticks.
To that end, United are willing to pay €70 million to get a hold of Costa’s signature. However, it remains to be seen whether the Red Devils will have enough funds to complete the operation.
Costa made his way through the youth ranks at Porto before establishing himself in the starting lineup in the 2021/23 term. Subsequently, the shot-stopper was impressive for the Primeira Liga outfit last season as well.
In the previous campaign, the Portuguese made 41 appearances in all competitions for the Dragoes, keeping 20 clean sheets. Although, the goalkeeper did not put in encouraging displays in the 2022 World Cup.
Onana is a proven shot-stopper with immense experience. The Cameroonian has played under Erik ten Hag before and is familiar with his style of play.
As things stand, Tom Heaton has played a lot during the recent friendlies. The English national has been one of the backups at United for some time now. We also have Dean Henderson in our ranks for now.

If the Red Devils lose depth in the goalkeeping department, it would be wise to sign a new shot-stopper. However, spending a considerable sum on Costa would not make sense.
