Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was happy with the performance of Andre Onana against Real Madrid at the NRG Stadium in Houston.

Los Blancos took on the Red Devils on 27 July in Texas. The Cameroonian started the game and played the full 90 minutes. Unfortunately, the 27-year-old was beaten twice as the Old Trafford side lost 2-0.

Speaking to the media via Metro, Ten Hag was impressed with Onana’s display despite United’s defeat. However, the gaffer feels there is still a lot of work to be done.

“I think good, solid. Two very good saves. He was there in the moment the team needed him, so he did his job. I think he integrated well in our team.

“This is the first game and detail, we have a lot of work to do between him and the defending part (of the team). You could see with the second goal where we are not close at the back post. It can’t be that and goals will come there.”

In the ongoing transfer window, the Cameroonian completed a move to the Old Trafford side from Inter Milan. After a standout campaign in Italy, the 27-year-old has reunited with Ten Hag.

Onana grew and developed under the Dutch manager at Ajax Amsterdam before making a move to the Nerazzurri last summer. With the Serie A giants, the shot-stopper made it to the Champions League final and caught a lot of people’s attention with how composed he was in possession.

The Cameroonian showcased his abilities against Madrid as well. Against the Santiago Bernabeu outfit, the 27-year-old looked comfortable with the ball at his feet.

David de Gea left a lot to be desired in that regard in the 2022/23 term. The Spaniard also made a number of errors in the previous campaign and was inconsistent.

Tom Heaton heavily featured in the friendlies prior to the game against Los Blancos. We also have Dean Henderson in our ranks at the moment.

Jude Bellingham and Joselu managed to get the better of Onana in the fixture. The former Borussia Dortmund midfielder was able to dink the 27-year-old in the opening minutes. Hopefully, the Cameroonian will be able to find his feet soon and make us a better team.
