Harry Maguire ‘considering’ Manchester United future after stepping down as captain

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire is ‘considering’ his future at the club after stepping down as the captain, according to Sky Sports.

Erik ten Hag has stripped the England international of the armband at the Old Trafford side. As a result, now, the centre-back is contemplating his options going into next season.

The 30-year-old expressed disappointment at not being able to lead the team out on the pitch anymore but is still committed to the Red Devils. However, it remains to be seen whether he will remain in Manchester in the ongoing transfer window.

West Ham United are one of the teams who are being linked with a move for Maguire this summer. The Hammers are looking to get the English national on loan or get him permanently.

Other teams in the Premier League and overseas are also keeping tabs on the defender’s situation at Man United. His current contract with the Red Devils runs until June 2025.

Ten Hag is not expected to announce a new captain before the Old Trafford side travel to the United States for the pre-season tour. The gaffer has a few decent options to choose from, like Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro.

However, the Portugal international seems like the go-to candidate to don the armband. In the previous campaign, the 28-year-old was the de-facto leader, with Maguire on the bench in most games.

Man United signed the former Leicester City star in the summer of 2019. He was handed the captain’s armband a few into his stint at the Manchester-based club by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Unfortunately, the 30-year-old has not led by example over the last few campaigns and it is understandable that the Dutch manager has decided to choose a new captain. It will be interesting to see whether this decision will push the English national towards an exit from the Old Trafford side.
