David de Gea eyed by clubs in Saudi Arabia after Manchester United exit
Former Manchester United shot-stopper David de Gea is being eyed by a number of clubs in Saudi Arabia after becoming a free agent, according to the Daily Star.
The 32-year-old parted ways with the Red Devils recently after his contract expired at the end of June. Now, several teams in the Middle Eastern country are looking to acquire the veteran goalkeeper’s services this summer.
One of the reasons the Old Trafford side were reluctant to extend the Spaniard’s deal was his high wages. However, that will seemingly not be an issue for the Saudis as they are willing to entice the former Atletico Madrid star by doubling his previous £375,000-a-week salary.
United had asked De Gea to wait before signing for a new club until they had found a replacement for him. It is understandable if the Spaniard was not too pleased about that.
The shot-stopper spent 12 years at the Old Trafford side and served the club admirably. He was the number one at the Red Devils for over a decade and developed into one of the best goalkeepers at the club.
De Gea left United as the most-capped shot-stopper in the club’s history. He won the Premier League and a few other major titles at the Old Trafford side during his stint.
In the previous campaign, the 32-year-old was Erik ten Hag’s first choice in between the sticks. Despite some wobbles over the course of the seasons, the Spaniard put in some exceptional displays.
Unfortunately, it was arguably time for the Red Devils to move on from the veteran goalkeeper. He seemed uncomfortable playing under the Dutch manager, who is keen on building up front the back.
