Sunderland approach for Manchester United shot-stopper Nathan Bishop rejected
Manchester United have ‘knocked back’ an approach from Sunderland to sign shot-stopper Nathan Bishop this summer, according to The Athletic (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The Championship outfit are looking to bolster their goalkeeping options in the ongoing transfer window. To that end, the Red Devils’ 23-year-old is on the Stadium of Light side’s radar.
In the previous campaign, the Black Cats took Amad Diallo on loan from the Old Trafford side. It ended up being a fruitful deal for all parties involved as the Ivory Coast international thrived in the second tier of English football.
Sunderland have Anthony Patterson in their ranks, who has been their number one for some time now. However, their second choice, Alex Bass, has been allowed to join AFC Wimbledon this summer.
Man United signed Bishop in the winter window of 2020 from Southend United. Over the years, the English national has played exclusively for the Red Devils reserve team and has not featured in a competitive game for the senior side.
In the recent pre-season friendly against Leeds United, the 23-year-old was on the bench. However, Tom Heaton started the match, while Matej Kovar played in the second half in between the sticks.
As things stand, David de Gea is no longer at the club. The Spaniard’s contract with the Old Trafford side expired at the end of last month and he is now a free agent.
Dean Henderson, who spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest, is on the sidelines with an injury. As a result, Erik ten Hag does not have a lot of goalkeeping options at his disposal for now.

Therefore, it is understandable that Man United do not want to let Bishop leave. However, it remains to be seen whether the club’s stance will change once we add another shot-stopper to our ranks.
