Manchester United admire Leicester City star Harvey Barnes, who is on the radar of Newcastle United this summer, according to the Daily Mail (h/t Manchester Evening News).

The Magpies are interested in acquiring the English national’s services in the ongoing transfer window. However, the Tyneside outfit still have some work to do before getting a hold of his signature.

Eddie Howe’s team are looking to add the forward to their ranks and have done the groundwork regarding the same. However, as things stand, the St James’ Park side are not in a position to meet the Foxes’ £40 million price tag on the 25-year-old.

Barnes made his way through the youth ranks at Leicester and has developed into a quality player over the last few years. In the previous campaign, the England international was the King Power Stadium side’s top goalscorer in the Premier League.

However, the forward’s performances last season were not enough to keep the Foxes in the English top flight. As a result, they were relegated to the Championship.

On the other hand, Newcastle’s fortunes have changed since Howe’s arrival. They finished fourth in the league table in the 2022/23 term. The Magpies have the likes of Alexander Isak, Callum Wilson, Anthony Gordon, Allan Saint-Maximin and Jacob Murphy in their ranks.

At United, the left wing was occupied by Marcus Rashford for most of the previous campaign. The 25-year-old was Red Devils’ talisman in Erik ten Hag’s first year in charge.

Alejandro Garnacho also broke into the first-team setup last season and became a key player for the Dutch manager on the left-hand side of the attack. Barnes’ arrival would arguably hinder the Argentina international’s development.

Therefore, the Red Devils have other areas on the pitch they should focus on strengthening for now. Leicester’s asking price for the English national is also considerable. But whether the Old Trafford side will make a concrete move for the 25-year-old remains to be seen.
