Former FC Porto full-back Alex Telles not keen on Benfica move from Manchester United
Manchester United star Alex Telles has revealed that he has no intention of joining Benfica this summer, having played for their rivals FC Porto in the past.
In the 2022/23 campaign, the full-back was on loan at Sevilla. Now, the Brazil international is expected to part ways with the Old Trafford side once again in the coming weeks.
To that end, the defender has been linked with a move to the Lisbon-based club in the ongoing transfer window. However, speaking on the Denilson Show on YouTube (h/t Manchester Evening News), the 30-year-old dismissed talks regarding making a move to the Eagles.
“When you play for a club and leave a legacy, leave a good image, fought so hard to play and leave a good image… I, Alex, would not play for the rival, for example. Because, for example, I made history at Porto, everyone likes me there. There’s no way to play for Benfica, you know?”
United signed Telles from Porto in the summer of 2020 from Porto. At the Dragoes, he spent three years before the Red Devils came calling for the left-back’s services.
The Brazilian won two league titles at the Primeira Liga outfit before joining the Old Trafford side. Benfica, who are one of the Estadio do Dragao side’s biggest rivals, won the league in the previous campaign.
Therefore, it is understandable that the defender does not want to ruin his legacy at Porto by making his way to the Lisbon-based club. However, it remains to be seen where his future lies.
At United, Erik ten Hag counted on Luke Shaw at the left-hand side of the defence last season. The England international was pivotal to our success and put in some impressive displays. The 27-year-old even played as a centre-back on occasions to good effect.
The Old Trafford side also have Tyrell Malacia in their ranks. He joined from Feyenoord last summer. In the previous campaign, the Holland national was a backup for the gaffer.

Thus, as things stand, we have enough quality at left-back. As a result, Telles seems surplus to requirements. Where will the Brazilian play next season? Only time will tell.
