Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana is close to making a switch to Manchester United
According to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport (h/t Manchester Evening News), it is ‘only a matter of time’ before Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana joins Manchester United.
United have marked Onana as the potential replacement for David De Gea, who is set to leave the club after the expiry of his contract on June 30th.
United already have had two bids rejected for the player by Inter Milan but there is a belief that a deal can be done with Inter Milan ready to sell due to FFP restrictions and Onana keen to reunite with Erik Ten Hag at United.
It is believed that Ten Hag is the driving factor behind the club’s pursuit of the flamboyant goalkeeper, who impressed many with his ball-playing abilities with Inter last season.
This is exactly what was missing at United and although De Gea won the Premier League Golden Glove, it was seen by many that the Spaniard’s time at the club will be coming to an end soon.
Onana is the opposite of what De Gea used to bring to the team, especially when the team has possession. He has the capability of acting as another player to build the play from and will allow the team to play with a higher defensive line than last season.
Ten Hag’s signings to date have all made sense and improved the technical security of the team. Onana will certainly add to that and it is tough to believe that United are making sensible decisions in the market where they are acquiring the right profile instead of just a top player.
It is crucial as unlike last season where Ten Hag played a transition-based football, he would like to assert more control with the ball and play a possession-based style.
