Borussia Dortmund to reignite their interest in 21-year-old Manchester United winger Anthony Elanga
According to the Daily Mail, Borussia Dortmund are once again showing interest in signing Manchester United winger Anthony Elanga this summer.
The German giants had previously approached the 21-year-old in January, but the deal failed to materialise. Elanga enjoyed little joy last season and fell down the pecking order at Old Trafford.
The Swedish star made the move from Malmo’s youth system to Man United in 2015. Since then, he has played for the senior team 55 times, scoring four goals and providing four assists across all competitions.
Elanga had a difficult season under coach Erik ten Hag, as he failed to score any goals and only managed two assists in 26 matches across various competitions.
His playing time was limited this season, with just five starts in the Premier League and one in the Europa League, primarily due to Marcus Rashford’s strong performances on the left flank. Elanga faced competition from Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Alejandro Garnacho, all of whom were ranked higher than him in the pecking order.
Despite the earlier success under the guidance of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick, Elanga has failed to kick on. Given that his contract only runs out in the summer of 2026, the Red Devils will have a strong hand in negotiations.
After struggling to impress Ten Hag last season, the club might be open to letting the 21-year-old leave in search of more regular playing time. Dortmund have reignited their interest in signing the young attacker, as they previously attempted to sign him in January along with Everton.
The Red Devils would be willing to entertain offers for Elanga as they look to generate funds for their own summer transfers, and a fee of around £10 million could be sufficient to secure his departure from Old Trafford.
RB Leipzig could also be in the race to sign Elanga, as Emil Forsberg, the winger’s fellow Swedish compatriot, supposedly urged the club to pursue the young attacker.
While speaking to Aftonbladet, (h/t The Athletic) [subscription required], Elanga himself expressed frustration in March regarding his lack of playing minutes at the club. He was also excluded from the squad for the EFL Cup final and was an unused substitute in the FA Cup final.
Dortmund have been keeping an eye on Elanga, but he is not the only young talent from United that has caught their attention. Manager Edin Terzic is also considering a move for Tunisian midfielder Hannibal Mejbri.
On the other side, Zidane Iqbal is also set to leave the club, as United have officially announced his departure. He will be joining FC Utrecht on a permanent transfer this summer. It would be safe to say that Ten Hag is not holding back players who have not been in their best shape at the club.

The manager wants to keep young, talented players with world-class potential who suit his playing style. Elanga’s potential move could be a blessing in disguise for both the player and the club.
Dortmund could be an attractive destination for any young player since they provide a great platform for their development. Elanga will be working hard to jump into Terzic’s starting XI. The Swedish might get the chance to revive his career, and the club will gather some funds for future sales. It is a win-win situation for both sides involved.
