New number one goalkeeper on Manchester United agenda this summer
Manchester United are eyeing the addition of a new number one goalkeeper to their squad in the ongoing transfer window, according to the Manchester Evening News.
Those in the hierarchy at the Old Trafford side have concluded that the team needs a new first-choice shot-stopper. As things stand, there is uncertainty around the future of David de Gea at the club.
At the moment, the 32-year-old’s contract with the Red Devils is set to expire at the end of the month (transfermarkt). The Spaniard is not guaranteed a starting spot in between the sticks next season if he does end up staying.
To that end, United have a few options on their radar. The Manchester-based club have been linked with FC Porto’s Diogo Costa and Inter Milan and former Ajax Amsterdam shot-stopper Andre Onana.
In the summer of 2011, the Old Trafford side signed De Gea from Atletico Madrid. Over the years, the Spaniard has been ever-present in the Red Devils’ teamsheet.
However, the 32-year-old has made his fair share of errors in goal for United. In the current campaign, the veteran goalkeeper has struggled to play under Erik ten Hag.
The Dutch manager seemingly wants the team to play more possession-based football. Therefore, our shot-stopper evidently needs to be good with the ball at his feet. However, De Gea leaves a lot to be desired with his distribution.
We have Dean Henderson on our books for now. The English national spent last season on loan and Nottingham Forest. This summer, the 26-year-old could be sold to the Tricky Trees. The Red Devils also have Tom Heaton and Nathan Bishop in their ranks, whose contracts were extended recently.
