Manchester United defender Harry Maguire to hold talks with Erik ten Hag regarding his future

According to Mirror, Manchester United defender Harry Maguire will have talks with the manager Erik ten Hag to discuss his future at the club.

The report also reveals that the Red Devils are open to selling the England international, who fell down the pecking order under ten Hag after two games in the 2022/23 season.

After starting the first two games against Brighton and Brentford and losing them, ten Hag dropped Maguire from the team in favour of a central defensive partnership of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.

The England international played a total of 1599 minutes in all competitions for United during the 2022/23 season. That too despite being fit for the majority of the campaign.

There were times when ten Hag even played Luke Shaw as a centre-back in a league or European game, but did not have the trust in Maguire.

What that told us is that the manager is not bothered whether he has the England international in his squad or not.

Moreover, Maguire’s contract at Old Trafford expires in 2025 (Transfermarkt). So, the club can sell him now and hope to recuperate some of the money they spend on him in 2019.

From the player’s viewpoint, he is still only 30 and could play a few more years at the top level. Centre-backs generally play till their mid-30s.

So, he should also push for a move to a club where playing time is guaranteed for him. Playing regularly at the club level would also help him keep his place in the national side ahead of the upcoming Euros in 2024.
