According to the Portuguese publication Corriere de Manha (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United are stepping up its interest in FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa.

Despite winning the Premier League Golden Glove, there are still question marks over David De Gea’s long-term future at the club, with many deeming the club legend to be not the right player Erik Ten Hag needs and what he expects from his goalkeepers.

De Gea has been responsible for costly errors just this season. His errors against Sevilla in the UEFA Europa League quarter-final and in the FA Cup final against Manchester City are the most notable.

While there have been talks of a new contract being offered to the player on a reduced salary as the current one, Ten Hag would be keen to add another keeper to his ranks to provide added competition and a different profile to the one currently available.

Costa provides a very good option for United. Still only 23, the player has the potential to be a top keeper and has already displayed signs of top talent on big stages such as the Euro Championships.

There is a release clause of £65m in the 23-year-old’s contract which could be activated in the summer and although the price is a bit steep, it does provide the club with a goalkeeper that could hold down the fort for many seasons.

It remains to be seen whether United indeed move forward and signs the player as there will be competition for his signature with Chelsea and Newcastle United also showing interest in the player.

The transfer window begins shortly and it is imperative that the club backs Ten Hag with the signings that he needs to allow the team to take another step in the right direction. Moving forward with an interest in Costa certainly signifies that.
