Alejandro Garnacho thinks there is no one better than Aaron Wan-Bissaka in one-v-one defending
Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho hails Aaron Wan-Bissaka and claims that the fullback is the best when it comes to one-v-one defending.
After an inconsistent 2022, Wan-Bissaka came back strongly in the second half of the 2022/23 season and earned his place back in the regular starting XI.
The Englishman has never let the team down in defending his side of the pitch. Not many wingers or forwards have gone past him, either by dribbling or through sheer pace. The former Crystal Palace man has everything to do well off the ball.
Here’s what Garnacho said when asked about Wan-Bissaka and his defending (h/t PL Media Team, via Manchester Evening News):
“Aaron Wan-Bissaka, probably defending one vs one he is the best in the world, for me. He goes to the floor, he’s fast too so he’s difficult.”
While all that is good, the next part of Wan-Bissaka’s development should be his work on the ball and whether he can influence games in the other half of the field as well.
At the moment, his game on the ball is equivalent to him having two wrong feet. He can make basic passes, but putting quality crosses or balls in the opposition box is a far-fetched question.
The 25-year-old may not become a Dani Alves or Trent Alexander-Arnold (creative masters from right-back) now, however, if he adds 10% value to his in-possession game, Erik ten Hag may always have him in the regular starting XI.
If not, Diogo Dalot, who recently signed a new deal with United, could be a healthy option. The competition for places may spur Wan-Bissaka on to do the development he is required to make.

Coming back to his praise, the Englishman is, without a doubt, the best fullback defensively. But, football games are won on the other half of the field, preferably closer to the opposition box.
