Manchester City and Manchester United interested in Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella
Manchester United are set to battle Premier League rivals Manchester City to sign Inter Milan star Nicolo Barella, according to SportMediaset, via FCInterNews (h/t The Sun).
The Red Devils are ready to challenge the Sky Blues to acquire the Italy international’s services this summer. Erik ten Hag is looking to reinforce his squad and the Old Trafford side are expected to bolster their engine room.
To that end, Man United are ‘crazy’ about the prospect of getting a hold of the 26-year-old’s signature. However, along with the Red Devils and the Cityzens, Liverpool and Newcastle United also have him on their radar.
Barella has been at Inter since 2019. Over the years, the Italian has developed into one of the best midfielders in Serie A. The 26-year-old also won the Euro 2020 with his national side as well.
In the current campaign, while the Nerazzurri have not been at their best, they have made it to the Champions League final. The Stadio Giuseppe Meazza side will take on City in the final on 10 June.
Pep Guardiola’s team already have an abundance of talent in the middle of the park. The Sky Blues can call upon the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, Rodri and Ilkay Gundogan, amongst others.
As for United, apart from Casemiro and Christian Eriksen, none of our other midfielders has made a big enough impact. Even the Danish national petered off a bit towards the end of the season.
Fred, Scott McTominay and Donny van de Beek have been at the club for a few years now. However, their inconsistency has been frustrating. As for Marcel Sabitzer, he came to the Old Trafford side on a short-term loan in January.

Therefore, we could do with more quality in the engine room. Barella is a quality player with immense talent. But will the Red Devils be able to beat the likes of City to the punch? Only time will tell.
