Manchester United have ‘enquired’ about signing RB Leipzig defender and France U21 international Mohamed Simakan, according to Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna on Twitter via Get French Football News (h/t Manchester Evening News).

The 23-year-old is attracting interest from a few sides, including the Red Devils, ahead of the upcoming transfer window. Premier League rivals Arsenal have also previously asked for information regarding the centre-back. However, the Old Trafford side have also joined the race for him.

Simakan signed for the Bundesliga outfit in the summer of 2021 from Ligue 1 side Strasbourg. The 23-year-old signed a four-year contract extension at Die Roten Bullen in December.

Over the years, the French national has been a key player for the Red Bull Arena side. The defender has been a pivotal part of Marco Roses’ team’s backline in the current campaign.

Leipzig are not short of promising and quality centre-backs. The Bundesliga outfit have the likes of Josko Gvardiol, Willi Orban and Lukas Klostermann in their ranks.

As for United, Erik ten Hag also has decent depth in the central defensive areas. The Dutch manager has relied on Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane for most of the season as his preferred duo.

Unfortunately, the Argentine was ruled out for the rest of the campaign after picking up a knock in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals against Sevilla. Since then, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw have deputised at the back.

However, our skipper and the Sweden national have spent most of their season on the bench. Therefore, it would not be a surprise to see either of them leave the Red Devils next summer.

If that does end up happening, we will evidently need to bolster our defence. In that case, someone like Simakan is a promising talent to place our bets on.
